Not too long ago, J. Claire and I met a friend, now based in London, in southern France. We stayed in Nice and had a blast. As typically occurs when friends travel together, we each had our own, sometimes conflicting ideas about what we wanted to do. Our differences were never more pronounced than when it came to dining. Our friend wanted to enjoy long, relaxing dinners at some of the best restaurants Nice had to offer. I, true to form, wanted to have gelato prior and subsequent to each and every meal. J. Claire was simply enjoying the pastries she purchased at shops throughout the day.

What we could, however, all agree upon was an evening beachside, wine & cheese picnic. Along Nice’s pebbly beaches, we laid out our spread: a selection of cheese, bread and wine. Our friend tried to light candles, despite the wind’s resistance as J. Claire and I impatiently attacked the brie. Good friends. Good food cheese. Good wine. Good conversation. It is really all you need to be happy. An hour later, full from bread and cheese, we happily stumbled back to our hotel to watch a few episodes of Nip/Tuck before bed.
